Uttarakhand: People missing in Chamoli disaster will be considered dead

New Delhi: The missing persons will be declared dead in the natural disaster in Chamoli district of Uttarakhand. For this, the state government has decided the process. In this regard, Health Secretary Amit Negi has issued a notification to all the DMs and District Birth and Death Registration Officers of the state and informed about the prescribed procedure regarding death certificate for the missing persons in the terrible disaster on 7 February. They have been asked to follow it immediately.

The circular states that death is usually registered on the basis of the information given by the concerned persons, but in exceptional circumstances such as an extraordinary incident in Uttarakhand, death can be registered at the behest of an officer after investigation in exceptional circumstances. Normal procedure will be followed in issuing death certificate of those whose bodies have been found. But before issuing the death certificate of the missing people whose bodies have not been found, it will be ensured that they died in the disaster in Uttarakhand.

The people missing in the disaster have been divided into three categories for issuing death certificates. The first places missing people who were permanent residents of the disaster affected areas or permanent residents of the nearby places who were living in the disaster affected areas at the time of the disaster. In the second category, they are missing people who were residents of other districts of Uttarakhand, but were present in the disaster affected places at the time of the disaster. And in the third category are missing tourists or individuals from other states, who were present at the disaster affected places at the time of the disaster.
