Chennai: Prime Minister Narendra Modi said that Tamil Nadu has a great name in the field of medicine and the Center has approved 11 new medical colleges for the state.
Delivering the 33rd convocation address of the Dr MGR Medical University via video-conferencing, he said these medical colleges will come up in districts which did not have a medical college.
He also announced that the Union government would provide funding of more than Rs 2,000 crore for each of these colleges. Referring to the covid pandemic, Mr Modi said India has not only handled the COVID better, but also helped other countries by producing medicines and vaccines.
University Vice-Chancellor Dr Sudha Seshayyan said this was for the first time in the university’s history that a Prime Minister has delivered the convocation address. A total of 21,889 undergraduate, postgraduate, doctoral and post-doctoral students received their degrees in medical, dental, AYUSH and allied health sciences courses.
