New Delhi: The Supreme Court on Friday asked a gangster-turned-politician Mukhtar Ansari to shift to UP jail . The Supreme Court has said in its order that within two weeks Mukhtar Ansari should be sent from Punjab to UP jail so that he can face the cases there.
The order was delivered by a bench of Justices Ashok Bhushan and R Subhash Reddy in the Supreme Court. Mukhtar Ansari is currently lodged in Ropar Jail in Punjab. Mukhtar Ansari is also an MLA from Mau. They have been opposing the move to shift UP jail. Ansari had demanded that the cases against him be shifted outside Uttar Pradesh.
The Supreme Court in its order also said that the special MP / MLA court of Prayagraj will now decide in which jail Ansari or Allahabad or Banda should be sent.
Significantly, the Punjab government was also opposing the shift to Ansari. The Ropar jail administration has been citing the poor health of Mukhtar Ansari. At the same time, Ansari has been saying that there is a danger of life in UP.
Mukhtar Ansari is lodged in a Punjab jail since January 2019 in an alleged extortion case. Senior advocate Dushyant Dave, appearing for the Punjab government, had said that Ansari is also a criminal for Punjab. He had said that the demand of the UP government is against the constitutional provisions.
