New Delhi: WhatsApp has appealed in the Delhi High Court on Wednesday against the new digital rules of the central government. WhatsApp has filed a legal complaint demanding a moratorium on the applicable rules. The company says it is committed to user privacy and the need for messaging apps to “trace” chats undermines people’s right to privacy.
The Ministry of Electronics and Information Technology (IT) had asked social media platforms to comply with the Information Technology (Intermediate Guidelines and Digital Media Ethics Code) Rule 2021 by May 25 or face strict action.
Under the new rules, WhatsApp has been asked to provide information about those who are posting wrong. At the same time, the company says that it cannot give information of anyone alone because the messages on the platform are end-to-end encryption. Due to this encryption system, neither WhatsApp nor any third person can view or store any message.
