New Delhi: Information and Technology Minister Ravi Shankar Prasad said on Thursday that WhatsApp users have no need to fear the new social media rules and these rules are designed to prevent misuse of these forums.
He further said that under the new rules, users will have a strong mechanism for redressal of grievances. Prasad said that the government welcomes criticisms including the right to ask questions. Prasad posted on the micro-blogging platform Koo and also tweeted, ‘The new rules empower ordinary users of social media in the event of any misconduct and misuse’. He said that the government fully respects the right to privacy And respects him.
Prasad said, ‘There is no need for ordinary users of WhatsApp to be afraid of the new rules. Their basic purpose is to find out who started the message that carried out the specific crimes mentioned in the rules.
He said that under the new IT rules, social media companies will have to appoint an India-focused Grievance Redressal Officer, Compliance Officer and Nodal Officer, so that millions of users of social media can get a platform to redress their grievances.
