Auto retail sales in India jump 34% in July

NewDelhi: Automobile retail in India bounced back strongly in July 2021, simultaneous to the reopening of dealerships around the country, driven by the relaxations offered by states and the Centre in COVID-restrictions.

Most vehicle segments, including passenger, two-wheeler, and commercial vehicles reported robust growth, with the total sales jumping almost 34 percent to touch 15,56,777 units in the previous month, as compared to 11,60,721 units in the corresponding period last year.

The passenger vehicle segment alone reported a 63 percent jump in sales with as many as 2,61,744 units hitting the rods in July 2021, as against 1,60,681 units in the same period of 2020. Similarly, two-wheeler sales bounced 28 percent last month to deliver as many as 11,32,611 units, as against 8,87,937 units in 2020.

The commercial vehicle segment, on the other hand, reported over two-fold growth to clock 52,130 units, as against 19,602 units in the same month during 2020.

According to the Federation of Automobile Dealers Associations (FADA) President, Vinkesh Gulati, July witnessed a robust recovery in auto retail as there was high demand across all categories.

The jump in tractor sales was, however, marginal at 7 percent,  with just 82,388 units leaving the dealerships, as compared to the 77,257 units reported last year.

However, with IMD predicting normal monsoon rains during August-September, the sowing operations are likely to pick pace gradually. This will probably rub off on the rural market, especially in the tractor segment,”  the FADA official opined.

The Federation of Automobile Dealers Associations (FADA)  was established in 1964 and presently is identified as the apex national body of the automobile retail industry in India. As of today, it represents more than 15,000 automobile dealers and approximately 26,500 dealerships across the country.
