Congress Appoints Rajesh Thakur to Lead Jharkhand State Delegation

Sonia Gandhi, the Congress president, named Rajesh Thakur as president of the party’s fractious Jharkhand branch and four new working presidents. Thakur, one of the party’s five functioning presidents in Jharkhand, will now take over as state unit leader from Rameshwar Oraon, who is also the finance minister in the state’s Hemant Soren-led UPA administration.

“The party president has also selected working presidents Geeta Kora, lawmaker Bandhu Tirkey, Jaishankar Mahto, and Shahzada Anwar,” the office of general secretary (organization) KC Venugopal said in a statement. “The party values Dr. Rameshwar Oraon’s efforts as departing PCC President. According to the information, outgoing Working Presidents Kamlesh Mahto, Irfan Ansari, Manas Sinha, and Sanjay Paswan all contributed to the party.

Several Congress MLAs openly demanded the departing president’s resignation from the party office, citing the principle of one man, one job. Some lawmakers have been camping in New Delhi in recent months, seeking a change of guard in the state. Oroan, a former union minister, was appointed to lead the state unit months before the 2019 assembly elections. The JMM-Congress-RJD coalition defeated the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) took power.
