Unemployment rate down in India, reached pre-lockdown level

New Delhi: The unemployment rate in the country has come down to the level before the lockdown. The unemployment rate in the country for the week ended 21 June was 8.5 percent. The nationwide lockdown imposed to prevent the outbreak of Corona left millions unemployed and the unemployment rate in the country reached 23.5 percent in April and May.

Although the unemployment rate in urban areas still remains high above the level before lockdown, it has decreased drastically in rural areas. The Center for Monitoring Indian Economy (CMIE) said in its weekly report on Tuesday that MNREGA and kharif sowing have provided employment to people in rural areas.

The unemployment rate in March was 8.75 per cent and reached a high of 27.1 per cent in the week ending 3 May. After this it started declining. The unemployment rates in the first three weeks of June were 17.5 percent, 11.6 percent and 8.5 percent.

According to CMIE, the unemployment rate has also decreased in urban areas but it is still higher than before the lockdown. The unemployment rate in cities was 11.2 percent in the week ended 21 June. According to the report, it is 200 basis points higher than before the lockdown. The unemployment rate in cities averaged 9 percent during the 13 weeks before the lockdown.
