What is Distraction?

Concept of the DayWhat is Distraction?

Date:

Just recently I read a statement by a political leader about how the opposition party is using distraction science to hide their disasters. I really wanted to know what distraction really means. Is it really a science or a term that is being used to gain more votes from the common men? Distraction is something that takes away your attention from what you are doing currently. For example, if you have been writing an article and your mother or partner calls you up, your attention reduces to your current task as you get the thoughts of your loved ones, and that reduction in attention or focus is called “distraction”.

Other ways of distractions are music, phone calls, visual triggers, social interactions, and even chats. Say you are in a cyber cafe and waiting for your friend, immediately you get a call from your boss to take an important online meeting with your colleagues. You won’t be able to give your best in this, because of the setup where you standing and the friendly moment your mood is in. So, the call that you will make will obviously be a distracted one to your colleagues.

Tips to express your needs to your partner

Distraction also affects the performance of the tasks at hand. Say, you are studying for an exam that is going to happen tomorrow, and there is a loud festive noise in your area where people are dancing and singing in celebratory mode. You won’t be able to focus on anything you study or read because your attention is more on the song’s lyrics and the way people are happily enjoying their time. The result of it will be that you will not sleep well and perform poorly in the exams making you even get low grades.

Distraction can also come in the form of visual appeal. For example, you are standing at a bus stop and waiting eagerly for your bus so that you get into it and reach a spot on time. But you see a celebrity walking in a showroom that is just opposite the bus stop. Seeing everyone doing crazy acts to grab the attention of the celebrity will get you distracted from watching the next bus that has come to the stop, thus making you miss the bus.

Distractions are not good if they are coming your way. However, distractions are good in certain cases where you are worrying all the time because of your current situation. For example, if you have taken a huge loan from the bank and are thinking day and night about how you will repay the loan amount with interest, you need a distraction to come out of this worrying situation.

You will have to distract your mind to attract something good that will reduce your tension and also blood pressure levels. For example, visiting a religious place or listening to soft music whenever you get the worrying thoughts about a bank loan will help you overcome the situation with the help of distraction. So, we can say that distraction is good or bad depending on the situation and circumstances.
