New Directors Are Appointed in 4 IITs

According to officials, new directors were appointed at the Indian Institutes of Technology (IITs) in Delhi, Madras, Mandi, and Indore on Monday.

IIT-Bombay professor Rangan Banerjee has been named the institute’s future director, while IIT-Madras professor V Kamakoti has been named the institute’s director, according to them.

‘SHAKTI,’ India’s first indigenously developed microprocessor, was designed by Kamakoti.

Laxmidhar Behera, an electrical engineering professor at IIT-Kanpur, has been named director of IIT-Mandi, while Suhas Joshi, a mechanical engineering professor and dean of alumni and corporate relations at IIT-Bombay, has been named the next director of IIT-Indore, according to the officials.

Professor Ranjan Banerjee, the Forbes Marshall Chair at IIT Bombay, graduated from the same institute with a B.Tech (Mechanical) degree. He went on to IIT Bombay to get a PhD in Mechanical Engineering.

The incumbent Director of IIT Delhi, V Ramgopal Rao, congratulated Banerjee on her new post through Twitter.

V Kamakoti, a professor in the Department of Computer Science and Engineering, headed the team that built and booted up India’s first indigenously-developed microprocessor, dubbed “SHAKTI,” which may be utilised in mobile computing devices and networking systems.

Laxmidhar Behera, the newly appointed Director of IIT Mandi, is currently a Professor in the Department of Electrical Engineering’s Control and Automation Specialization. However, Suhas Joshi, the new Director of IIT Indore, is a Fellow of the Indian National Academy of Engineering as well as the National Academy of Sciences. He uses physics-based modelling and characterization to improve the productivity and quality of multi-scale machining processes.

Joshi worked as a postdoctoral researcher at Georgia Tech in the United States in 2002 and as a Visiting Faculty member at the University of Illinois in Urbana-Champaign in the United States in 2003. (2005-06). During the years 2014-17, he was also the Head of the Mechanical Engineering Department at IIT Bombay.
