I met Shailaja (name changed) the other day in my college library. She was in search of MBA reference books and I helped her to get some books by referring to online websites on MBA. I was glad she had opted to do MBA after doing a bachelor’s in banking and insurance. When probed further, she said her dream is to get into an international bank job as it will pay her well and also make career progression in her favorite sector.

I was happy for my friend who had finally figured out her dream job and dream career as well. Such clarity and confidence come when you research well about your existing career, your job interests, your personality strengths, and how you want to leverage all your knowledge, skills, and abilities to get into a final career choice. It is interesting to note that Shailaja wasn’t as confident as she is now during her college days.

An average performer in exams, Shailaja never took her studies seriously. It was after she started taking career advancement classes and personality development courses that made her understand what is her true calling. Many times we get influenced by peer groups on what career choices we should make. After all, everyone wants to build a house, have a car, have a big-fat bank balance for retirement savings and also take that world tour. But to reach these goals in today’s inflation times is a dream next to impossible for many.
So one needs to really work towards their goals with a clear and strong mindset. A wavering mind will never take you anywhere, remember that. Another friend of mine worked as an administrator in a college and had done M.Com but then she moved to a shipping company to understand what logistics is all about then she did a travel certificate program. However, things went haywire when she couldn’t get the job satisfaction that she was looking for.
This kind of confusion happens when one doesn’t plan as per their interests but in fact, gets influenced by what others are doing in their lives. You really need to be original in this tough and stringent marketplace. You cannot wait for others to help you walk on the success path. You need to start on your own, thinking about how you can make progress and walk ahead.
Stop comparing by looking at the progress of others. You can simply understand your ambitions in life and get them to tick marked as and as you complete reaching your goals. Say, taking the first step in your research career can also go a long way in building the same. But you need to be consistent and not give up if you don’t get immediate results.
Confidence gets built up automatically when you start seeing your progress. Practice achieving perfection in your career so that when someone thinks about a particular task, they remember your name because of that much hard work and honest efforts you had put into your past projects.
