CISF opened fire to save their lives”: Election Commission on Cooch Behar incident

New Delhi: During the fourth phase of assembly elections in West Bengal, a big incident happened in Koch Bihar. Four people died during the violence here. Regarding this, the Election Commission said that the incident of firing at a polling booth in the Sitalakuchi assembly seat of West Bengal was due to ‘misunderstanding’ by the local people. According to the Election Commission, security forces opened fire to save lives.

The Election Commission’s statement came because the CISF opened fire in order to control the violence at the time of voting, in which four people have died. However, TMC claims that the death toll is five. On which the Election Commission sought a report.

There was a clash between BJP and Trinamool Congress workers at around 11 am on Saturday at a polling station in the Sitalakuchi assembly seat of Cooch Behar. According to reports, bombs and bullets were used from both sides in the clash. Firing was done by the CISF to control the situation. In which 4 people died.

The Election Commission says that in the morning when the Central Security Forces were trying to help a sick boy near the polling station in Sitalakuchi, some locals thought the boy was being beaten up by CISF men. In this misconception, 300-350 villagers gathered there. An agitated mob attacked the polling station. The mob also tried to snatch his weapons from the security forces. The Election Commission said that in defense, security personnel first fired in the air but the crowd did not back down. Finally, in order to ensure the safety of EVMs and other voting material and to save their lives, the security forces were forced to fire. Because the security forces had no other option but to do this. Four people died as a result.
