Patna (Bihar): There were speculations in Bihar’s capital Patna and in the national capital New Delhi that Bihar Chief Minister Nitish Kumar’s alliance with the National Democratic Alliance (NDA) developed a chasm and he might come out of the NDA. It happened on Tuesday when Kumar, after submitting his resignation as Chief Minister to the Governor Phagu Chouhan and after quitting the alliance, headed for the residence of former chief minister Rabri Devi.  He held a meeting with Rashtriya Janata Dal (RJD) leader Tejaswi Yadav and other leaders of the Mahagathbandhan (Grand Alliance).

National president of the Janata Dal-United (JD-U) Rajiv Ranjan Singh alias Lalan Singh accompanied Kumar to Rabri Devi’s residence. Kumar said that he had discussed with each legislator, member of the legislative council and each Member of Parliament of the JD (U) after resigning from the chief minister’s post and after quitting the NDA.

He also said that besides submitting his resignation to Chauhan, he handed over a list of legislators of the Grand Alliance with which he would form the next government. The JD (U) also withdrew support from the Narendra Modi-led Central Government. On getting information about Kumar’s decision to quit NDA and about his resignation as chief minister, a large number of people gathered outside Rabri Devi’s house and outside Raj Bhawan.

The developments that took place in the past few days indicated that Kumar was going to snap ties with the NDA. He did not attend the oath-taking ceremony of President Droupadi Murmu and the NITI Ayog meeting chaired by the Prime Minister, saying that he was down with covid-19. It is for the second time in the past eight years that he has called off ties with the NDA. According to reports, Kumar will be the leader of the Grand Alliance and Tejaswi Yadav will be the deputy chief minister. The alliance, comprising the JD-U, the RJD, the Congress and the Left parties, has an absolute majority in the House.
